From the north

In 2017, I spent much time wandering the streets of Cairo, capturing everyday moments of life in one of the world’s most densely packed cities. With over 20 million people crammed into its chaotic, buzzing streets, Cairo felt alive in a way that was both overwhelming and beautiful. The city was in the middle of some tough times—politically and economically—yet people still went about their daily routines, making do, laughing, working, and living as they always had.
I was drawn to the quiet moments amid the chaos: a vendor’s hands as he wrapped food, a child smiling through a crack in a crowded bus, and an elderly man sitting by the side of the road. Despite the noise and the rush of the city, these simple, intimate moments felt like they held so much meaning. Cairo’s culture is this mix of old and new, where ancient traditions coexist with the fast-paced demands of modern life. Capturing these moments felt like trying to freeze something fleeting in a city that never stops moving.

Egypt’s diversity stands out when you travel from north to south. In places like Cairo and Alexandria, you feel the Arab, and Mediterranean influence with a mix of modern life and Islamic culture. But down in Aswan, the vibe changes.
The people are deeply influenced by Nubian traditions, with their own customs, clothing, and even language. Nubians have a rich history distinct from the Arab-majority north, and their warmth and hospitality are evident.
Life here moves at a slower pace, deeply connected to the Nile. The contrast between the fast-paced north and the calm, culturally rich south shows just how diverse Egypt truly is.
